Arts get together discussion at The Chapel

26th April 2017 @ 7:00 pm

Are you interested in the visual arts – painting, sculpture, photography, digital media, printmaking, drawing, craft, textiles, etc; music, dance, theatre and opera; creative writing; public art; well-being through art;…the list goes on. The 5 Yr Planning work for Abergavenny and District has highlighted that the opportunity to make more of the Arts is seen as a priority by many, including a broad cross-section of community groups, councillors and the wider public.

So what would be the best use of the limited time we each might spare to promote the Arts together, beyond what we’re each doing already? Many people felt that we could communicate more and learn from and support each other better. Other ideas included joining together to use vacant premises for ‘pop up shops and exhibitions’ or perhaps starting to plan an arts festival of some sort, building on the success of the Abergavenny Writing Festival and the Crickhowell Open Studios weekend.

If you’d like to get together to chat ideas through to promote the Arts in Abergavenny and the wider area? If so, please come The Chapel on Market Street on Wednesday 26th April at 7pm for our first meeting.

If you’re coming along please message Anna Williams at annamariawilliams@hotmail.com so we can make sure there’s enough coffee to go around.

Abergavenny Road Club Youth Session

29th April 2017 @ 10:30 am – 12:00 pm

Abergavenny Road Club runs coached sessions for our young riders, aged between 5 and 16 years, each Saturday, between 10.30 am and noon, at Abergavenny Leisure Centre, in line with school term dates. To find us, drive past the centre, and along the exit road above the playing fields. Immediately prior to the exit, turn right and you will find us on the gravel pitch (which we call the red gra).

Up to 70 young riders attend the cycling sessions provided by qualified coaches and willing, patient, parent volunteers. The sessions involve fitness, techniques, some racing and lots of fun.

On arrival, look for a coach or parent helper. They will welcome you and ask you to complete a pack which includes information about the club, a Parental Consent and Rider Information form, a membership form and a bike and clothing checklist. Please complete the Consent form before you child commences the session. We will add your child’s name to our coaching register, so that we can log their attendance each week. Regular participants must become members of Abergavenny RC.

The club is affiliated to Welsh Cycling and registered with British Cycling’s “Go Ride” development programme, which provides a fun and safe way to introduce young riders to the world of cycle sport and provides a platform to improve bike handling skills.

To embrace the huge demand for youth cycling the club has invested heavily in volunteers and currently has 11, active Level 2 coaches, 2 Welfare Officers and a host of helpers, who give up their time for free to ensure that cycling is inclusive to all and sessions are provided free of charge.

Parents are expected to get involved by helping set up or clear up after sessions, assisting at club events, etc.

Your child must have a bike which is in good working order (it is essential that it has working brakes and older riders will need working gears). He/she meeds a helmet, comfortable, tight fitting sportswear and a pair of gloves or cycling mitts. In cold or wet weather, waterproof clothing is required. He/she also needs to bring a drink of squash or water in a suitable container.

If your child is inexperienced or new to the club, you must remain at the session the whole time – the club does not offer a child minding service.

9 to 5 The Musical at the Borough Theatre

2nd – 6th May 2017 @ 7:00 pm

Following the sell-out and award winning ‘Sister Act’, AAODS promises to delight again with the upbeat & high energy ‘9 to 5 – the Musical ‘.

Based in the 1970s when men ran the corporate world and women made the coffee and took notes, the story centres around three unlikely female co-workers who concoct a plan to get even with their lying, hypocritical and bigoted boss. As they take control of the company they realise there’s nothing they can’t do – even in a man’s world.

Outrageous and thought provoking the musical is about friendship, coming together and taking care of business…. and each other.

With music and lyrics* by Dolly Parton and featuring her original hit song, 9 to 5, this brilliant show is funny, feisty, packed full of catchy tunes and guaranteed to have you dancing in your seat.

*contains very occasional bad language some may find offensive Click here to find out more.
