Sotavento Big Band

10th July 2017 @ 8:00 pm

The Sotavento Big Band is a Jazz and Tango orchestra formed in Buenos Aires 13 years ago. It started as a simple ensemble of students, has become the most active orchestra of the jazz scene in Buenos Aires.

The orchestra recreates the jazz golden age of the swing and the Argentine tango, in a musical project which combines the melodic and rhythmic patterns of Tango with harmonies and jazz improvisation.

Sotavento Big Band has a repertoire that focuses from the traditional tango to the music of Astor Piazzola in the Big Band format, with arrangements written specially for it. The ensemble has the particularity of having trombones and trumpets replaced by saxophones, giving a very warm sound.

The orchestra, which will visit BMJ as part of their European tour, have been introduced to us by Tango Jazz – who were so well received at last year’s wall2wall Jazz Festival.

Taiko Drumming – introduction to Fukui-style course

14th July 2017 @ 7:30 pm – 9:00 pm

Heather Murray, from Taiko Wales, was awarded a grant this year from the Arts Council Wales to travel to Japan and train with Taiko master Kurumaya-Sensei. Drawing from his wisdom and artistry, the course is based on the unique ‘Hokkuriko’ style of Taiko, developed by Sensei in the Fukui area of Japan. There is an emphasis on etiquette, focus and discipline. We begin with a short, Zazen meditation to connect with our still, creative centres; we then integrate movement, playful sticking and freestyle. You need to bring your enthusiasm, a level of fitness and a sense of timing.
We’ll explore ‘Ki’, the Japanese concept of life force, and ‘Ma’, the concept of silence and space, as we connect with the deeply respectful ways of this tradition.
Suitable for those new to Taiko and for players keen to develop their skills.
