Friends of Castle Meadows Spotlight

Welcome to our organisation spotlight on the Friends of Castle Meadows group. The group is run by volunteers who work with the Monmouthshire County Council to manage the meadows, a traditional floodplain between the River Usk and town a haven for a variety of plants and wildlife and of course the main venue for this year’s National Eisteddfod.

The Friends of Castle Meadows work and the local council work with the aims:

• to increase, restore and enhance the bio-diversity of the Meadows;
• to support and enable access to the green space;
• to develop the Meadows as an educational and recreational opportunity for all;
• to support and enable walking and cycling routes across the green space.

The group have already carried out two walks this April and will be carrying out more over the coming months.

• Sheila Kerry will lead a botany walk on Saturday May 7th starting at 10am.
• May 14th will see pond dipping, with Becky Ward, at 10am.
• On July16th find out about butterflies with Jeff Davies. Meet at 11am at the Orchard, Mill Street.

All the walks are about two hours long. Unless stated, the walks start from Byfield Lane lower car park.

The Friends’ group organise different activities  to improve the Meadows from combating invasive species to planting.
