Abergavenny born Sam Cross wins Rugby Sevens Silver Medal with Team GB

Team GB won an unexpected silver medal in the men’s rugby sevens tournament after losing to a stunning Fijian performance, which gave Fiji their first Olympic medal since their debut in 1956.

The British team fought hard throughout the tournament, and achieved victories over Kenya, Japan, New Zealand, Argentina and South Africa before finally falling short against Fiji. It was a performance that few expected, but one that saw Abergavenny born Sam Cross and fellow Welshman James Davies win silver medals as 2 of the 12 members of the first Team GB Rugby Sevens Olympics Squad.

Cross was born in Abergavenny and grew up in Brynmawr. He first played with Brynmawr Youth before moving to Ebbw Vale, Cardiff Met while at university, and currently plays for Newport RFC. He’s amassed over 100 appearances for Wales in rugby sevens, and has previously represented Wales playing rugby league.

So congratulations to Sam Cross and the rest of the Team GB squad on their silver medals!

We can’t wait to see how Becky James does over the weekend, and will hope for more Welsh (and Team GB) success!
