Abergavenny Festival of Cycling 2016 Information and Social Ride

Abergavenny’s biggest cycling event of the year takes place over the long weekend of the 15-17 July.

On Friday 15th July, in the late afternoon and early evening Abergavenny town centre comes to life with high speed racing around a short circuit in the town. It’s a fantastic spectacle and very convivial to watch with pint in hand. This year’s racing will not only see the familiar domestic pro teams taking part but also a team all the way from Rwanda.

On Sunday 17th July it’s the Grand Prix of Wales and the Abergavenny Cycle Group will be leading a social ride out to the pretty village of Grosmont to watch race as it makes three circuits of the countryside around the village, passing through the main street of the village each time. Grosmont will be ‘en fête’ with plenty of fun things going on, around the Angel pub and the castle.

The Abergavenny Cycle Group meet at 10am on Sunday from outside the post office in Abergavenny to make the 20km (13 mile) ride out to Grosmont. They will be riding on quiet lanes but it is hilly. Bring a picnic lunch and/or money to buy food and drink in the village. Once the race has passed through for the third time they will be getting their skates on and ride back to Abergavenny to watch the finish in the town centre.

If you don’t want to join the ride on Sunday but want to see more racing, the Para GP of Wales will be on in the town centre from 11.15-12.15. It’s another great spectacle in which many of the country’s fastest para-cyclists will be racing for the win.

Have a great cycling festival!
