Mrs Sparsit and Bounderby

“Hard Times” by Charles Dickens, presented by Suitcase Theatre Company

8th – 10th June 2017 @ 7:30 pm

Abergavenny’s Suitcase Theatre Company presents a fast-paced adaptation of the Dickens novel, “Hard Times”, dramatised by Stephen Jeffreys. In the Northern town of Coketown, the lives of all are dominated by a Utilitarian philosophy where the Imagination has no place. Into this arid world erupts the travelling circus – Sleary’s Horse-Riding. Louis Gradgrind struggles to find love and freedom in a story of pathos and drama, full of classic Dickensian characters.
This will be taking part at the Melville Theatre from the 8th-10 June.

Taiko Drumming – introduction to Fukui-style course

16th June 2017 @ 7:30 pm- 9:00 pm

Heather Murray, from Taiko Wales, was awarded a grant this year from the Arts Council Wales to travel to Japan and train with Taiko master Kurumaya-Sensei. Drawing from his wisdom and artistry, the course is based on the unique ‘Hokkuriko’ style of Taiko, developed by Sensei in the Fukui area of Japan. There is an emphasis on etiquette, focus and discipline. We begin with a short, Zazen meditation to connect with our still, creative centres; we then integrate movement, playful sticking and freestyle. You need to bring your enthusiasm, a level of fitness and a sense of timing.
We’ll explore ‘Ki’, the Japanese concept of life force, and ‘Ma’, the concept of silence and space, as we connect with the deeply respectful ways of this tradition.
Suitable for those new to Taiko and for players keen to develop their skills.
This event takes place at Glangrwyney Village Hall
