Working towards a Dementia friendly Wales

On February 13 th 2018, Wendy Westbury, Director of Sales and Marketing for Dormy Care and Helen Maiello, Managing Director of Dormy Care Communities met with the students at King Henry VIII School in Abergavenny.

Focussing on supporting the Welsh initiative in creating a dementia friendly Wales, a dementia friends’ session was delivered to year 12 and 13 students who are studying Health and Social Care. These free 45-minute sessions are delivered by
Dementia Champions who have been trained by the Alzheimer’s Society. The aim is to turn understanding in to an action by helping people become more aware of the differences they can make to help those living with dementia.

Nicola Williams, subject leader of Business and Health & Social Care, was delighted with the sessions and said what an excellent experience it was for the students and a great step towards a dementia friendly world. One student said “she absolutely loved the being part of this and learnt so much”. There are plans to return to the school and arrange further sessions for teachers and students as well as some additional training to support the students studying social care.

Dormy Care Communities are also working with the Monmouthshire Scout movement and helping them work towards their community engagement badges by linking in to the Alzheimer’s “A Million Hands campaign”. This seeks to raise dementia-awareness among the Scouts and empower them to make a difference locally.

Helen Maiello said “Our home is an integral part of the local area and supporting the community is a big part of what we believe in. With over 30 years’ experience in health and social care, as well as being a Registered General Nurse, I am passionate about making a difference and really empowering the lives of older people”

Dormy Care Communities are currently building a 70 bed Care Home in Llanfoist offering quality
residential, nursing and dementia care. The home will also provide a range of fully inclusive services
that will include a gym, café and bar, restaurants and beauty salon. Opening November 2018, we will
be looking for staff who share our values and beliefs.
