Portrait Drawing with Teresa Oaxaca

11th – 14th September 2017 @ 9:30 am – 4:00 pm

AT CWMDU STUDIOS

Join us for a four-day intensive portrait workshop where students will learn to work with charcoal, white chalk and brushes to create a quick likeness. Students will work sight size from a live model and Teresa will walk participants through the posing and lighting of the subject and the set up of drawing boards and tools. Live demos will be given to demonstrate how one constructs a 2D likeness using light and shade. Some discussion terms of the class will include sight-size measuring, line and gesture, chiaroscuro (learning to see patterns of light and shade), form modeling, half tones and highlights, massing of tone, terminator/core line of the shadows, basic anatomy, and how to render detail without loosing form or overall harmony. Emphasis on transitions and articulation of the form will be discussed, as well as gesture and line expression/calligraphy.

oaxaca-still-life

Still Life Painting with Teresa Oaxaca

15th – 17th September 2017 @ 9:30 am – 4:00 pm

WHERE: CWMDU STUDIOS

This class will teach still life painting using both direct and indirect methods over three days. Students will receive a lecture and two instructor demos, and given opportunity to make two such paintings using this method with instructor critiques, all while observing and painting from life. Drawing, composition, value, color and edges will be discussed as well as art materials.

During the lecture and the class the symbolism and significance of vanitas themes, masks and dolls and other votives or human or animals effigies will be discussed in history and in current practice. An effigy (a representation of a person, especially in the form of a sculpture)- helps provide anomaly and interest, both contextually and aesthetically, in an otherwise wild and living arrangement of plants. The human brain, hard wired to see and recognize faces and make sense of disorder, can find endless hours of study in creating, painting and admiring arrangements such as this.
