The Laefer Quartet is widely regarded as one of the most exciting and dynamic saxophone quartets currently performing in the UK.

Formed in 2012 at the Royal College of Music, the quartet were awarded the Boconnoc Music Award during their time there, and have won numerous awards since including Park Lane Group Artists and the Elias Fawcett Ensemble Award for an Outstanding Ensemble in the Royal Overseas League Competition.

They relish performing contemporary repertoire as well as transcriptions of classical works, and have performed in many leading UK venues including St John’s Smith Square, Wigmore Hall and the Purcell Room.

Their programme is both varied and diverse, crossing musical continents and genres. It will explore the saxophone quartet from the earliest piece written for the quartet formation by Belgian composer Singelée, right up to the present day with South African composer Clare Loveday and American composer David Maslanka. The latter was heavily influenced by J.S. Bach and this is evident in his beautiful and exhilarating Recitation Book.

As well as these original works for the instrument, the quartet will explore transcriptions of works by Ravel, Stravinsky and Nyman, each piece brought to life by the vibrant and engaging colours of the saxophone quartet.

So, whether it’s Stravinsky’s Circus Polka, written for George Balanchine’s ground-breaking New York collaboration between his ballet company and the Barnum and Bailey Circus, or Thierry Escaich’s boundary-pushing Tango Virtuoso which explores the ‘tango nuevo’ style popularised by Astor Piazzolla, you can expect a truly thrilling performance!
