Young People’s Summertime activities set to take place across Monmouthshire

Monmouthshire County Council is to provide a wide variety of activities to keep young people engaged throughout the summer holidays. These include play schemes, sports events and the Summer Reading Challenge offered by the council’s community hubs.

Once again, the county’s four leisure centres will run the popular Monmouthshire Games for children aged 5 to 12. The activities are based on learning new skills, developing confidence, meeting new people and most importantly, having fun while participating. Sports include swimming, football, netball, basketball, cricket, hockey, rugby, golf, rounders and tennis. The Monmouthshire Games run from Monday 24th July until Friday 25th August and the costs are £16 per day (9am to 3pm) or £19.50 (8am to 5pm). Discounts are available. Further play activities will take place at six community settings across the county for 5 to 11 year olds. These are free of charge, delivered in partnership with Torfaen Play and are funded with the help of town and community councils.

The playschemes run from Monday 31st July to Thursday 24th August (weekdays only) at the following venues:

· Deri View Primary, Abergavenny – 10am to 12 noon

· Kymin View Primary, Monmouth – 1.30pm to 3.30pm

· Bulwark Community Centre, Chepstow – 10am to 12 noon

· Thornwell Primary School, Chepstow – 1pm to 3pm

· Magor Primary School, Magor – 10am to 12 noon

· Caldicot Rugby Club, Caldicot – 1pm to 3pm

Monmouthshire’s youth service team is offering a mix of exciting activities – some free and some attracting a charge. These range from trips to the Royal Mint, the multi-sport festival at Cardiff’s Principality Stadium and Chessington Theme Park and Zoo to Nerf gun parties, barbeques and camping trips. Monmouthshire’s community hubs and libraries are calling for children to sign up for the annual Summer Reading Challenge 2017. The Summer Reading Challenge asks 4 to 11 year olds to borrow and read any six library books during the summer holidays, a time when children’s literacy skills traditionally dip.
To take part in this year’s Animal Agents theme children need to head to their local hub or library where they will receive a collector folder to keep a record of their reading journey. Children reading at least six library books over the summer will collect stickers to help them crack the clues and help the Animal Agents find out what’s really been going on behind the scenes!
Animal Agents launched in libraries across Monmouthshire on Saturday 15th July and runs until Saturday 16th September.
Abergavenny Leisure Centre is hosting activities to involve females aged 5 to 12 years in sport. The hugely popular Girls Can programme runs each Friday from 28th July until 1st September and offers hockey, netball, football, swimming, badminton, cheer leading, kayaking and tennis. Costs are £16 per day (9am to 3pm) or £20.90 (8am to 5pm).
Also at Abergavenny Leisure Centre are football training days for 5 to 11 year olds, run in association with Cardiff City Football Club featuring UEFA-qualified coaches. These take place from 9am to 3pm on 28th July, 11th, 18th and 25th August. An additional training day is earmarked for 12 to 16 year olds on Friday 1st September. The cost per day is £18.
