What is Abergavenny Carnival and Walking Parade and when is it happening?

What started out with a shout out on Abergavenny Voice in March 2018 has now, after hard work and pure stubbornness, become a reality.

Lisa Morris had a vision that Abergavenny should have a carnival again. So with that post on Abergavenny Voice, people started to get involved in the ‘committee’.

Questions were asked.

Where do we start? Get others on board. Chris Evans, he’s done this before! Andrew Powell from The Grofield – he knows people who know people. Lisa’s friends, Sarah Davies is very good at Facebook and motivating people. And other helpful and knowledgable people for hints and tips, general support and shoulders to cry on.

What shall we do? We can’t close the roads, too expensive. We can’t have floats like the old days, too many health and safety regulations now.

So, let’s have a walking parade.

Where shall we have it? Castle grounds? Not suitable for our needs really. Main street from Barclays to the monument. What if it’s not finished in time? Bailey Park it is then.

When do we do it? 29th

June 2019.
Who do we get involved? Everybody!!

And so, Community Samba Band, Graffiti Artist, Abergavenny Pride, Keiran Gething, Lido Group and Tenovous Sing with Us choir were the first people to offer to join them. Quickly followed by Kaos Circus, Lego Man, Dance Attack, Junior AAODS, Rio Feather Ladies, and still, groups are signing up every day.

So we are looking for young and old to join them on 29th June at 12 midday to parade from the old Drill Hall square (behind the cinema) to Bailey Park in your brightest and most colourful clothes. We want you also to make as much noise as possible so don’t forget your whistles, saucepans, tambourines, or any other musical instrument.

When we arrive at Bailey Park there will be stalls until 4pm with food, music, face painting, festival make-up, storytelling, and others plus an ice-cream van.

Abergavenny Carnival and Walking Parade have had a generous donation from Abergavenny Town Council and sponsorship from Morrisons, Waitrose and many others so entrance is free.
