Florence Foster Jenkins Film at the Melville Centre

10th October 2016 @ 2:30 pm – 4:30 pm

Based on an astonishing true story, starring Meryl Streep and Hugh Grant, and directed by Stephen Frears (The Queen, Philomena), the hilarious and inspiring Florence Foster Jenkins tells the inspirational true story of the New York heiress who obsessively pursued her dream of becoming a great singer by hiring Carnegie Hall in which to perform, despite her inability to sing in tune! The voice Florence heard in her head was divine, but to the rest of the world it was hilariously awful. The film celebrates the human spirit, the power of music and the passion of amateurs everywhere.
Certificate PG.

From Here To Absurdity Stand up Comedy at the Melville Centre

15th October 2016 @ 7:30 pm – 9:00 pm

Comprising 90 minutes of original comedy sketches – aimed particularly at those whose youth is behind them (i.e. the over 30s) – “From Here To Absurdity” offers a range of quick, sharp takes on the madness of the modern world. With 3 exceptionally versatile performers, its own technical support and an infinitely adaptable set, the show can be (and has been) performed virtually anywhere: from grand theatres, to village halls, to the upstairs rooms of pubs. Written by contributors to Private Eye, and inspired by the memory of Peter Cook and Beyond the Fringe, this sketch show represents an alternative form of live comedy and a refreshing change from stand-up.
